What Is Ambergris?
Ambergris is a solid, waxy substance formed in the digestive system of sperm whales to ease the passage of hard or sharp objects the whale eats.
Ambergris eventually passes out of the whale naturally. It’s discharged from the whales bowels along with all other bodily waste.
Lumps of Ambergris can spend many years floating at sea where they cure and change colour, eventually washing up on beaches across the world.
Ambergris has been used as a medication, aphrodisiac and food flavouring. Today it's used in perfumery as a fixative that allows scent to last much longer.
Identifying Ambergris
Every year we are contacted by people all over the world that think they may have found some Ambergris. Its appearance can vary due to the length of time it spends floating at sea so it’s not always easy to identify.
